On March 2, 2026, at 11:10 a.m., the Vietnamese Maritime Rescue Center, received information from the Phuong Dong Petroleum Transport Co., Ltd., the owner of the 'Sand' , that the ship had successfully located and rescued 21 crew members from the tanker 'MKD Vyom' (IMO 9284386), among them one Ukrainian, four Bangladeshi, and 16 Indian nationals. On March 1, 2026, at 9.50 a.m., the 'MKD Vyom', enroute from Ijmuiden to Ras Tanura with 22 crew members on board, had been struck by a projectile above the waterline in the engine room, about 44.4 nautical miles northwest of Muscat off the coast of Oman, causing damage above the waterline and water ingress as well as a fire in the engine room. One crew member, who was working in the engine room, was killed. Immediately upon receiving this information and following instructions from the Vietnamese Maritime Authority, the center contacted the m/v 'Sand', and its owner to verify the situation. It was confirmed that the vessel was safe and that the 21 rescued crew members were in stable condition. The center also proactively informed and coordinated information with the Oman MRCC, instructed the crew of the "Sand" to maintain contact, carry out the necessary procedures with the Muscat Port Authority, and closely monitored the vessel's voyage. The handover of the crew members was carried out in accordance with international maritime search and rescue regulations in the Port of Muscat. The ship was receiving assistance from the Muscat Port Authority with entry formalities.As of March 2, the blaze was reported under control, and the vessel remained afloat, pending towage to a safe port. Tanker was attacked and fired upon by pirates in Arabian sea apprx 400 nm off Porbandar India, Mar 4 or 5 2011. Rocked-propellered grenade hit supestructure, but didn’t explode. Vessel evaded attack and proceeded as scheduled to Sikka port, Gujarat, requiring assistance to disable grenade. On Mar 6 specialists from Indian Coast Guard and police boarded vessel and disabled RPG.
