Grounding in Tekirdağ

Jan 05, 2026 12:56

The 'White Line', with nine crew members on board, ran aground in the Marmara Ereğlisi district of Tekirdağ in the northern part of the Sea of Marmara due to strong southetly winds, which pushed it off course, while enroute from Libya to Martaş to pick up cargo, on Jan 3, 2026 at 2.30 p.m. The ship lost control and got stuck off Santos Beach. Following the incident, Coast Guard Command and Coastal Safety Directorate teams were dispatched to the area. Due to the unfavourable weather conditions, refloating attempts would be postponed until conditions improve. Divers attempted to inspect the grounded vessel on Jan 4, but high waves prevented a full assessment of the hull. Already on June 5, 2021, the ship, loaded with timber en route from Klintehamn to Riga, had run aground, sailing as 'Ramona', just south of Lauterviken, outside the Marpes nature reserve. on the western coast of Fårö. After two days, a salvage ship refloated the vessel and towed it to Kappelshamn. A few more days later, the Swedish Accident Investigation Board closed its investigation. No injuries to people or the environment had been found. However, the suspected crime, entitled negligence in maritime traffic, remained to be investigated by the Stockholm District Court. The verdict stated that the Finnish captain had “run aground once before, four or five years ago,” after falling asleep on duty. That is why he set an alarm on his mobile phone when course changes were to be made that the ship’s autopilot could not handle. However, on this night he had chosen to turn off the alarm, “because he judged that it was not necessary. After this, he had a memory gap, up until the time the ship was already aground and stated that he “may have dozed off or become inattentive.” The District Court found him guilty of crime and handed out daily fines totaling 23,200 crowns. Bridge repair completed more than one year after hit by Ramona

Apr 17, 2013 09:59

In the evening of Apr 15, 2013, shortly before midnight a 350-ton counterweight was finally mounted on the railway bridge over the Limfjord by the sheerleg "Samson". The installation was delayed as some of the so-called shims which are used to centralize and extend the legs were too thick. A local blacksmith had to produce thinner plates in great haste. The trip of the "Samson" to the bridge therefore started only at 6.10. p.m. At 6.30 the bridge was open so that the "Samson" could sail to the installation site. At 7.30 p.m. the crane with the counterweight arrived at the bridge which had been damaged in an allision by the "Ramona" on Mar 28, 2012.
