Roro ferry sold to Eckerö

Oct 07, 2025 19:23

The subsidiary of AS Tallink Grupp, Baltic SF VIII Limited and Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö have signed a sale-purchase agreement for the sale of the 'Sailor'. The vessel will be handed over to the new owners in October 2025. The vessel will be put into service instead of the 'Fjärdvägen' on the route between Långnäs and Naantali, which is a strategic step in line with the Eckerö Group's long-term vision of offering "floating bridges" between regions and creating a coherent, sustainable transport chain across the Baltic Sea. The acquisition of the 'Sailor' means that Eckerö Link can offer increased capacity, improved energy efficiency and the possibility of future development of both freight and passenger traffic. This strengthens Åland's role as a hub for maritime traffic and creates new opportunities for both business and society.

Ferry suffered technical problems

Nov 22, 2024 10:22

The “Sailor” suffered a technical failure due to a suspected broken cylinder/crankshaft on Nov 17, 2024, at 1.20 a.m. on its scheduled route from Paldiski to Kapellskär (Lat. 59.5677 Lng. 21.8473). The ship turned around half way through the voyage and was escorted by tugs back to Paldiski at around 10 a.m. The 'Sailor' proceeded to the Vene Balti shipyard in Tallinn on Nov 19 at 10 a.m. for repairs. At 1.20 p.m. it was assisted to the dock by a port tug.

Truck almost plunged into the sea

Sep 30, 2018 00:10

In the evening of Sep 28, 2018, a truck almost plungd into the sea while attempting to leave the "Sailor" in Paldiski upon its arrival from Kapellskär. The truck had a Latvian license plate. After the ferry had berthed in rough weather, the stern ramp suddenly gave way when the truck was about to roll down. It was caught on the partially flooded ramp, and the driver had a narrow escape from his flooded cabin. Later the crew managed to lift the ramp so far that the truck slid down onto the quay and could roll to safety. Finnish report with video: https://www.postimees.ee/6416790/video-paldiski-sadamas-libises-veoauto-peaaegu-merre The driver who posted the video thought that the incident could have caused either the suspension of the ship's rig as a result of the storm, or the driver of the Latvian truck was too tired and began to sail without first obtaining permission.
