Sanctioned tanker suffered engine failure in Kiel Canal

Feb 16, 2026 12:13

The "PVT Azura's" suffered an engine failure during the transit of the Kiel Canal on Feb 15, 2026, at 8 a.m. it came to a halt in Schwartenbek, near Kiel. The pilot reported the engine problem to the traffic control center in Brunsbüttel. There, it was decided that the tanker would have to be taken in tow by the Kiel based tugs "Stein" (IMO: 9241243) and "Parat" (IMO: 8128212) . The temporary berth in the Schwartenbek lock near Suchsdorf was located precisely on a bend in the canal. Around 10 a.m., both tugs arrived and secured lines to the tanker. The tanker was turned around and then towed back to Kiel by noon. Because the "PVT Azura" had last been in the Russian port of Svetly, near Kaliningrad, the ship fell under the sanctions. The tanker was permitted to transit the canal, but not to dock in any port. Since the "PVT Azura" caused no damage during the incident and did not collide with any other vessel, it was allowed to continue its journey after repairs. It was moored on Kiel Holtenau roads in pos. 54° 23' N 010° 10 E. After the repairs were completed, the ship left the anchorage at 8.20 p.m. UTC. with destination Oran and an ETA as of Feb 24. It was now taken the way around Skagen throught the Kattegat. The tanker belongs to the state-owned shipping company Petrovietnam Transportation from Saigon, which has repeatedly made headlines due to suspected violations of sanctions related to oil shipments from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela.
