Offshore ship quarantined due to flu symptoms of eight crew members

Jan 29, 2020 11:12

Eight crew members aboard the 'Atlantic Kingfisher' were displaying flu like symptoms and were now under quarantine. Two severe cases were transported to St. John’s for treatment. The ship entered port on Jan 28, 2020, around 8:30 p.m. An internal memo did not suggest the cases were in any way related to the coronavirus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan and has since spread to Canada, where three cases have been confirmed. Officials at Health Canada and DFO could not immediately say whether there was a connection. According to the internal email, the crew put a call into Search and Rescue at 12:15 p.m.. saying it had one member showing severe flu symptoms. At 2:39 a.m, a second case was reported. A further investigation uncovered eight people with flu symptoms. The Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre in St. John’s coordinated the response.
