The ‘Princess Maria’ remains detained in Algeciras Bay as of Oct 30, where it has been under administrative arrest for three days by order of the Maritime Authority. The vessel, with a Syrian crew, was arrested on Oct 27, after serious safety deficiencies were detected that prevened a safe navigation. While technical repairs were carried out, a delay could occurr due to waiting for spare parts, needed to bring the ship's essential systems up and running before it can resume its route. Some of the crew have submitted political asylum applications to the Spanish authorities. The ship was detained until the violations of international maritime safety regulations have been resolved. It had departed from the port of Marsa Brega, Libya, bound for Douala. Its voyage was interrupted in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar following a routine inspection that resulted in its administrative arrest. The crew, of Syrian origin, has requested asylum from the Spanish authorities on humanitarian grounds. The crew remained on board awaiting resolutions to their requests from the Spanish authorities. The ship is currently under the supervision of inspectors from the Maritime Authority and the APBA (Basque Country Port Authority), while repairs were carried out and procedures related to the Syrian sailors were handled. So far, the estimated duration of the detention and the exact scope of the technical interventions have not been specified. As of Oct 28, the ship was moored in pos. 36° 07' N 005° 25' W.
