On Dec 11 at 12.54 p.m., Aberdeen Coastguard received a Mayday Relay call from the fishing vessel "Resilient - LK 195". The "Resilient" was relaying a Mayday call they had picked up from the Fraserburgh registered fishing vessel "Esorah - FR 317". The Esorah, a 15 metre fishing vessel, with four crew had made the mayday call giving their position and that the vessel was taking water. Aberdeen Coastguard issued a mayday relay broadcast and three offshore support vessels as well as the Resilient made their way to the distress position. The supply vessel "Porto Salvo" arrived along with the dive support vessel "Acergy Osprey" and subsequently located a liferaft with the four crew from Esorah. The "Portosalvo" took the crew onboard and Coastguard rescue helicopter R102 from Sumburgh was scrambled and winched the crew into the aircraft and brought them to Aberdeen. The weather at the time wind Northwesterly 35-40 knots, sea rough, 5 metre swell.
