Ship adrift in storm Goretti
In the midst of the sorm Goretti, the 'Tosca', enroute from Dakar to Zeebrugge, left the northbound lane of the traffic separation scheme, heading towards Cap de la Hague. on the evening of Jany 8, 2026. After contact was established with the CROSS Corsen, it was confirmed that the ship was NUC and was rapidly approaching the coast. The maritime prefect then ordered the captain to stop the engines and let the ship drift. The southwest winds, combined with the strong current of the Raz Blanchard, were indeed allowing the ship to move away from the coast. As a precaution, the emergency tug 'VB Abeille Liberté' (IMO: 9308699) was deployed to remain near the ship and be ready to intervene in case of a deterioration of the situation. On the carly morning of Jan 9, once all risk of grounding had been eliminated, the ship was able to restart its engines and take a safe route off the coast of the Bay of Seine and resumed its voyage to the port of Zeebrugge, where it finally arrived on Jan 11.
14 crew members suffered from food poisoning - two medevacs
Enroute from Bremerhaven, where she had sailed on May 13, 2017, to Zeebrugge the "Tosca" contacted th Belgium emergency agency in the morning of May 14, 2017, and requested medical assistance to 14 crew members who had fallen ill, due to, it was believed, food poisoning. The vehicles carrier with a crew of 25 on board was moored on Zeebrugge outer anchorage at midday before calling for assistance. A Cayman NH90 helicopter was scrambled at Coxyde and a medical expert dropped off onto the ship. He decided that only two people required an emergency evacuation. After they were hoisted, they were taken to the Sint Jan University Hospital in Bruges, before the Cayman returned to the home base.
