An international crew member who allegedly fled the 'Polaris 3', docked in Townsville, seeking asylum has been tested for COVID-19 after handing himself in to police. The man left the livestock carrier with 11 other crewmen seeking asylum after it docked in Townsville on April 27, 2021. LThe Australian Border Force (ABF) was told on May 1 that 12 crew members had left the ship and had refused to re-board, with their visas subsequently cancelled. One man was unaccounted for, but the Queensland police said the man had turned himself in at a local police station overnight. He has undergone coronavirus testing and received a negative result. LThe 11 remaining crew members who refused to return to the ship had all tested negative. There has been no indication of anyone aboard the vessel being recently infected. The crew members might be granted permanent protection provided they met the relevant visa criteria. Each case was assessed on its individual merits, with the safety in particular countries being a factor of consideration. The ABF is working with Queensland authorities on the safe quarantine and detention of individuals. The 12 international crew members' visas have been revoked. All crew members were taken to a place outside Townsville where they will be complete quarantine under the direction and guidance of Australian Border Force. They'll quarantine and the Australian government and border force will determine if there is genuine refugee status from these people.
