On Feb 1, 2026, the 'Playa de Cativa' was detected with evidence of illegal fishing activities off the coast of Chubut, within Argentina's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by the Argentine Naval Prefecture. The trawler was located using the Coast Guard System, a technological surveillance platform operated by the National Maritime Authority. For approximately 45 minutes, the vessel navigated at a speed of less than four knots, and this behavior constitutes a presumption of trawling activity. In this context, this action was a possible violation of Law No. 24,922 – Federal Fisheries Regime, which regulates the exploitation and conservation of fishery resources in Argentine jurisdictional waters. The Maritime Authority had already notified the vessel's captain on Jan 29, that it was very close to the boundary of the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The captain was also instructed to maintain a safety margin to avoid accidental incursions. The notification was duly received by the person in charge of the vessel. Approximately twenty days ago, another foreign fishing vessel was detected allegedly fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in the area near Camarones Bay. The vessel, identified as the Bao Feng and flying the Vanuatu flag, reportedly entered the zone on the afternoon of January 10, prompting intervention by Argentine authorities.
