Phoenix

The 'Phoenix' ran aground in the early hours of March 6, 2026, near Ogijima Island, located in the Inland Sea. The vessel was carrying approximately 2,500 tons of kerosene at the time of the incident and was sailing approximately 100 meters west of the local lighthouse when it got stuck at the northwestern tip of the island. Rescue teams dispatched the patrol boat 'Kurinami' to th location of the grounding to assess the structural damage and the risk of an environmental disaster due to the flammable cargo. Upon initial inspection, officers noted that the tanker was listing slightly to port, but no signs of flooding in the internal compartments or fuel leakage into the sea were observed. The authorities' current priority was to ensure the hull's stability to prevent kerosene from leaking. The crew consisted of 15 people, including two South Koreans, six Myanmar citizens, and seven Indonesians, all of whom were safe and uninjured in the collision. Meteorological conditions at the time of the accident were considered favourable, with clear skies, moderate wind speeds of approximately 4 m/s, and good visibility. The work boat 'Taiko Maru was on scene to provide additional support. Just after midnight on March 7, the tanker was successfully refloated by the tug 'Kagawa Maru' and pulled to Takamatsu.
