Bulk carrier under tow to Aarhus
The 'Philipp Bay' has left Le Havre in tow of the tug 'Abeille Horizon' (IMO: 9178410) en route Aarhus, the original destination of the bulk carrier, on Jan 13 at 5.30 p.m,. The ship had arrived in Le Havre on Dec 27, 2024, in tow of the tug 'Abeille Liberté' after having suffered a fire on Dec 26at midday 40 kilometers north of Cherbourg. After an assessment, towing to Le Havre had been decided. The convoy was proceeding with just over four knots actually and is expected to reach Aarhus on Jan 20. Bulk carrier remains in Le Havre weeks after fire
The 'Phillip Bay' remained stationary at the Asia terminal of the port of Le Havre as of Jan 9, after suffering a fire on Dec 26 at midday 40 kilometers north of Cherbourg in its accommodation block. An assessment and intervention team, with two firefighters and a maritime expert, was quickly airlifted on board while the SNSM lifeboat 'Mona Rigolet II', the British patrol boat 'Seeker' and the emergency tug 'Abeille Liberté' were deployed to the bulk carrier and decided to tow it to Le Havre after an assessment Once in the port, it appeared that all the electrical harnesses to the bridge have burned out and need to be repaired. Fire in living quarters
Early in the afternoon of Dec 26, 2024, at 2.10 p.m. the captain of the "Phillip Bay" informed the CROSS Jobourg that a fire had broken out in the crew's living quarters. The vessel was sailing in international waters approximately 40 kilometers north of Cherbourg with 21 crew members on board and was carrying a cargo of food. The CROSS then deployed air-sea response resources. An assessment and response team comprising of two firefighters and a nautical expert was quickly hoisted aboard the vessel aboard the H160 French Navy helicopter based in Maupertus. They carried out an inventory of the incident and carried out initial investigations. The emergency tug 'Abeille Liberté' and the lifeboat from the SNSM station in Goury, 'Mona Rigolet II', were called out to assist the vessel as well as the British patrol boat 'Seeker'. At around 4:30 p.m., the fire was declared out. According to the initial expert reports on board, there were no casualties. The damage caused by the fire did not pose a danger to navigation safety or the environment. The vessel was taken to the port of Le Havre in conjunction with the services of the Seine-Maritime prefecture and berthed at the Quay d'Asie on Dec 27 at around 1 a.m..
