On Jan 28, 2026, the 'Thor Confidence', enroute from Santos to Algeciras, rescued a 69-year-old yacht skipper of the sailing yacht''Admirante', who had left Gandía and had been missing since Jan 17. He was bound for Guardamar del Segura, about 160 km further south along the same coastline. He had started the 55-mile day trip from Gandía to Guardamar del Segura, between Valencia and Alicante, on the morning of January 15, 2026. When he didn't arrive at his destination port that evening as planned, and his wife raised the alarm. That evening, the skipper managed to briefly contact emergency services by calling 112. He stated that he was probably off the coast of Benidorm, just before reaching Alicante. He also reported technical problems: the engine wouldn't start and he was unable to maneuver. Shortly after he pointed out that he had a life jacket, flares, and a life raft on board, the call was cut off – his cell phone battery was dead. Since the ship had no radio, he was cut off from the outside world from that moment on. Once his disappearance was reported, the search began on Jan 17, mobilizing ships and aircraft in an operation that lasted until Jan 22, when the search was called off. On Jan 27, a Frontex aircraft spotted the sailboat and a person on board signaling and calling for help, approximately 53 nautical miles northeast of the port of Béjaïa, more than 280 nautical miles from the point of departure. The 'Thor Confidence', which was nearby, diverted to the position, went alongside the troubled yacht, the mast of which had broken, and took the man on board, who will stay on the bulk carrier until it has arrived in Algeciras on Jan 29.
