On May 12, 2018, at 5 a.m. the NSRI Richards Bay duty crew was activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to rendezvous with the "Medi Hong Kong", sailing from United Arab Emirates, to medevac a 27 year old Indian sailor suffering suspected Malaria. The lifeboat "Spirit of Round Table II" was launched accompanied by a KZN Government Health EMS rescue paramedic and rendezvoused with the ship 25 nautical miles off-shore. Telkom Maritime Radio Services assisted with communications. The EMS rescue paramedic was taken onboard the ship to medically assess and the patient, in a stable condition, was transferred onto the boat and brought to the sea rescue station. He has been transported to hospital by an EMS ambulance. The NSRI had been first alerted on May 9 and the MRCC and a Government Health EMS duty doctor had monitored the patients medical condition pending the medevac. While the ship was dapproaching Richards Bay in the early hours of May 12 the evacuation was authorised and TNPA activated the NSRI Richards Bay duty crew.
