Asisstance in SAR operation off Vastervik
On Nov 28, 2016, a sailing yacht with two people on board got in distress about 13 nautical miles southeast of the lighthouse Gustaf Dalén in the Gotska Sea off Vastervik, having suffered an engine breakdown and an entangled sail. The wind was around 17 m/s with gusts of 20 m/s and the waves were rough. The sailboat was drifting and needed assistance. The SAR center sent the patrol boat "KBV 313", the "Ingegerd Ramstedt" of the Sea Rescue Society and asked two merchant ships. among them the "Pauline Russ", to divert to the disabled vessel at 4 a.m. Because of severe weather it turned out to be impossible to get the boat und der tow. An attempt to evacuate the crew with a life raft failed too. The crew of the "KBV 313" threw warm survival suits to the crew of the yacht. The rescue helicopter Lifeguard 007 was sent to the sailboat. At 06:28 a.m. it hoisted the two people from the water and took them to the University Hospital in Linköping. Meanwhile the "Pauline Russ" continued her voyage from Tilbury to Hanko, ETA Nov 28. All the participating units were thanked for their efforts. The drifting yacht was monitored by the Swedish Coastguard. Swedish report with photos: https://www.kustbevakningen.se/sakerhet-till-sjoss/nyhetsarkiv/dramatisk-sjoraddning-i-gotska-sjon/
