Patriot disembarked saved yachtsman at Fremantle
A solo yachtsman who had to be rescued by the "Patriot" after his boat's mast was struck down in heavy weather off the coast of Perth has arrived safely in Fremantle in the evening of Nov 20. The man was believed to be in good health. The man had been in the middle of an around-the-world trip when he ran into trouble around 2100 km west of Perth. He activated an emergency signalling device, which was relayed to a US emergency response centre and then to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. A broadcast was sent out to ships in the area, and was eventually answered by the "Patriot". The ship changed its course in order to pick-up the stranded yachtsman, and a Falcon 900 jet aircraft was dispatched from Perth to aid in the search. The sailor was picked up on Nov 17 at around 1.20 p.m. and arrived at the Patrick Terminals Fremantle on Nov 20 at 8 p.m. The yacht has been left at sea. An around-the-world sailor has been rescued in the Indian Ocean west of Perth by the "Patriot" after his yacht lost its mast during rough weather in the night of Nov 16, 2017. The ship went to the solo sailor's rescue after he alerted the International Emergency Response Coordination Centre in the United States. The "Patriot" arrived at the yacht's location and rescued the sailor on Nov 17 about 1 p.m. The Australian Safety Maritime Authority also sent a jet with a West Australian police officer on board to the stricken yacht 2100 kilometres west of Perth. The sailor is in good health, and he and the "Patriot" were expected to arrive in Fremantle on Nov 20.
