Cargo ship grounded in Bremanger

Dec 04, 2015 10:03

On Dec 4, 2015, at 4.40 a.m. the "Nyfjell" ran aground east of Risøya in Skatestraumen, Sogn og Fjordane, with a crew of five on board. The lifeboat "Halfdan Grieg" was alerted and tried to pull the ship off the ground, but had to give us when the ship began taking on water in the engine room. The lifeboat assisted in draining the water then with a bilge pump. The cargo of gravel was dumped at 8 a.m. to make the salvage easier. The "Boa Heimdal" of the Norwegian Coastguard was monitoring the site, and the two tugs "Stadt Årdal" (IMO: 8414829) and "Stadt Sløvåg" (IMO: 8414817) were dispatched from Florø for salvage. At 9 a.m. the "Nyfjell" was floating again and towed to the quay in Måløy where a diver of the lifeboat started inspecting the hull with a camera. The ship berthed in Øelen on Dec 6 at 11.30 a.m. It had been enroute from Florø to Nordfjordeid when it ran aground.
