Freighter dragged its anchor off Viveiro

Jan 23, 2019 11:47

The 'Muros', enroute from Aveiro to Avilés, on Jan 23, 2019, at 6.45 a.m. with a crew of nine aboard, started dragging its anchor due to strong NW winds with waves of five to seven meters height in the Ría de Viveiro estuary. The engine initially did not start, and the unloaded ship could not maintain its position and was threatened to drift on rocks of the coast of A Mariña. Salvamento Marítimo at 7.30 a.m. mobilized the "SAR Gavia" and "Salvamar Alioth" to assist. The tug "Sertosa Treinta" (IMO: 9238014), which was closest to the "Muros", managed to take the drifting vessel in tow. Also, the helicopter 'Pesca 2' of the Xunta de Galicia was called in case its intervention was necessary. Finally, the Maritime Captaincy of Burela decided that the ship was to be taken to the port of Celeiro, in Viveiro, where it safely docked at 10.45 a.m. The Municipal Civil Protection Service, the Local Police and the National Police were notified.
