Reefer lost propulsion off Chile

Feb 09, 2026 12:37

The Chilean Navy was mobilized to assist the 22 crew members of the 'Frio Naruto', after it lost propulsion en route from Balboa to Tema, in a highly complex technical and weather-related operation in the Cape Horn area, on the afternoon of Feb 6, 2026. A distress call was received at 6:10 p.m. from the ship, which was adrift about 90 kilometers south of Puerto Williams, pushed by the strong winds. To address the crisis, the Third Naval Zone deployed a Naval Helicopter 56 and a reconnaissance aircraft P-111 and Naval 256 for constant monitoring, as well as the AHTS 'ATF 66-Galvarino' (IMO: 7382419) and the Patrol Boat 'LSG 73 - Isaza' to assist. On the morning of Feb 7, the vessel regained its propulsion and resumed sailing under its own power with an ETA at the port of destination as of Feb 22. The Chilean Navy maintained a preventive escort with the 'Galvarino', as the reefer left the jurisdiction of the Beagle Naval District. Former Chief Mate Sentenced to Prison in Oil Dumping Case

Jul 14, 2015 07:24

The former chief mate of the Panama-flagged reefer MV Murcia Carrier has been sentenced to three months in prison for failing to maintain an accurate oil record book in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS). The sentence was handed down to Valerii Georgiev, 42, a Russian citizen, by the Honorable Joseph Rodriguez, the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division for the District of New Jersey. During his trial, it was found that on April 27, 2014, Georgiev ordered other crew members on board the Murcia Carrier to dump overboard several barrels containing some hydraulic oil. While Georgiev disputes the number of barrels dumped into the sea, the government believes that approximately 20 barrels of hydraulic oil were dumped overboard. The dumping occurred in international waters off the coast of Florida while the vessel was in transit from Costa Rica to New Jersey, and the discharges were then never recorded in the ship’s oil record book. During the course of the Coast Guard boarding, Georgiev denied that dumping occurred and instructed crew members on board the vessel to deny that dumping had occurred. http://gcaptain.com/former-chief-mate-sentenced-to-prison-in-dumping-case/
