Hay on livestock carrier caught fire

Mar 05, 2026 10:17

A fire broke out on the 'North Star 1', docked at the port of São Sebastião, on the North Coast of São Paulo, on the night of March 3, 2026. .The vessel was transporting approximately 2,600 cattle destined for Turkey. As soon as it was alerted, the municipal administration mobilised teams from the Civil Defense, SAMU and the municipal health network, in addition to maintaining a permanent presence on site to support operations coordinated by the Fire Department. The crew began fighting the flames, but awaited the arrival of specialised teams as they lacked adequate protective equipment. In total, 18 firefighters and six vehicles from the 11th Fire Brigade and the Maritime Fire Brigade participated in the response, with support from teams from Caraguatatuba and Ilhabela. During the firefighting, the port's fire hydrant experienced a technical failure, requiring the deployment of water tanker trucks to ensure a continuous water supply until the fire was under control. Also tugs with firefighting equipment assisted in the extinguishing work. The protocol for multiple victims was activated as a preventive measure. Three mobile care units, two intermediate support units and one advanced unit with a doctor, provided assistance on site. 20 crew members were evaluated, with four being referred to the Emergency Care Unit, from where they were released since. One firefighter also received treatment for smoke inhalation. All were assisted without any serious cases. According to the Companhia Docas de São Sebastião (CDSS), the fire started around 9 p.m., possibly on the third deck of the vessel, where hay was stored, intended for the cattle being transported on the ship. The fire consumed approximately 300 tons of hay. The cattle remained in a lower compartment isolated from the fire until conditions allowed for safe removal. Rescue teams then removed the animals from the ship with the accompaniment of the Agricultural Surveillance, and are being prepared for return to a farm linked to the Ministry of Agriculture in Barretos for sanitary control and monitoring. The cause of the fire was to be investigated by the competent authorities and the Brasilian Navy, while the City Hall continuesd to monitor the situation until the complete normalization of port operations. The Fire Department finished the mopping-up operations on the afternoon of March 4. At 12:45 p.m. the ship was released after finishing the inspections. Livestock carrier remains under detention - substandard living conditions not tolerated

Feb 26, 2014 10:34

The "Express 1" remained detained in Fowey as the necessary improvements have not yet been made to the vessel which was towed into Fowey on Feb 3 after the ship suffered engine failure off the Lizard. An investigation was launched after the authorities discovered the crew had no hot water or heating and had not received adequate safety training. The ship remained under detention while maintenance work continued to ensure the ship meets safety standards. MCA would re-inspect it once the maintenance work was completed. The detention was served for a number of safety issues, including concern over the crew's emergency training, the fire detection systems, and deficiencies in the crew accommodation with a lack of hot water and heating. Sub-standard living conditions for crew members would not be tolerated, the MCA said. The MCA and Port Health Authorities ensured there was no risk to safety, the environment, crew health and welfare and to public health ashore.
