Wärtsilä's to Refit North Sea Giant with Cost-Cutting Energy Storage Solution
Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) today says it will retrofit the North Sea Giant, one of the world's largest subsea construction vessels, with an energy storage system to reduce the vessel's energy consumption, operating costs, and exhaust emissions. Cato Esperø, Director Sales Norway for Wärtsilä says the energy storage project on the North Sea Giant will set a new standard for this type of vessel. Offsore supplier allided with breakwater
The "North Sea Giant" on Feb 6, 2013, at 12.45 a.m. allided with a breakwater at Peterhead port, Scotland, and sustained damage to its hull. High winds had caused it to crash into the North Breakwater. No injuries and no pollution have been reported. The vessel remained moored outside the breakwater waiting for the weather conditions to improve. The allision resulted in the vessel sustaining two substantial gashes of up to six metres in length on its starboard side. Due to the prevailing weather conditions at the time, it appeared that the pilot was unable to board the vessel outside the port to aid the vessel’s entry into Peterhead. Temporary repairs were being carried out to the vessel at Peterhead. The "North Sea Giant" is under contract with Technip Norge, a subsidiary of the France-based oilfield services provider.
