Tanker ran aground off Dua Island

Feb 04, 2026 12:45

On Jan 30, 2026, the 'Nikko' ran aground off Dua Island in pos. 00° 20' N 132° 09' E due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and high waves. The tanker had departed Jayapura Port on Jan 28, 2026, en route to Tarjun Port, Kalimantan, carrying crude palm oil (CPO). At 05:25 a.m. WIT, the vessel changed course from 270 degrees west to 236 degrees, but was still on a safe course. At 05:40 a.m. the vessel was struck by an alum and a large wave on the starboard side, causing it to be pushed to port. Attempts to bring the vessel back onto its original course were unsuccessful due to strong winds and the sea state. At 05:50 a.m., the weather worsened further, causing the ship to run aground. The water depth around the vessel varied between 4 and 5 meters at the bow, hull, and stern. Meanwhile, the water depth was estimated to be approximately two meters. After the vessel ran aground, the crew immediately shut down the engine and conducted a thorough inspection to ensure the vessel's condition and the crew's safety. So far, there has been no marine pollution. The Class I KSOP Sorong deployed two tugs to attempt a refloating operation. However, previous refloating attempts were unsuccessful because the towline parted due to weather conditions. Onceerefloated, the tanker was to be taken to Wasior Port for inspections by the Navy Inspector and the Indonesian Bureau of Classification (BKI) to ensure the vessel was seaworthy, before being towed to Sorong. The crew members were to undergo a medical examination after the salvage.
