Nord Taipei enroute to Gibraltar with rescued rowers

Jan 31, 2012 09:18

On Jan 31, 2012, at 01.10 a.m. the "Nord Taipei" rescued the six crew of the "Sara G" from their liferaft. All six were reported unharmed and as well as can be expected after spending 14 hours in a liferaft in rough seas. The "Nord Taiepi" is bound for Gibraltar with an ETA of 9th February. The crew will coordinate the recovery of the vessel. Falmouth Coastguard were assisting with coordinating the rescue of one Irish and five UK nationals on board the "Sara G" after it capsized during their Atlantic Odyssey challenge. The alarm was raised when their EPIRB was activated on Jan 30, 11 a.m. Falmouth Coastguard received the details of the beacon and informed the contact of the incident, who told Falmouth Coastguard that she had spoken to a member of the crew earlier this morning and that all had been well. With the last known position of the boat 520 nautical miles east of Barbados, Falmouth Coastguard contacted several coordinating authorities who were able to contact vessels in the area, eventually speaking to their counterparts in Fort-De-France, Martinique, who were able to contact two merchant vessels which agreed to proceed to investigate. Meanwhile, the shore contact for the "Sara G" managed to get through to the crew of the boat via satellite phone and ascertained that the boat had capsized and they had abandoned to the liferaft, which was tethered to the capsized vessel. Beneath the "Nord Taipei", a further vessel, the "Naparima", was also proceeding with an ETA of 4.30a.m. on Jan 31.
