Tanker remains at accident site, SAR ops going on

One crew member of the sunken vehicles carrier 'Byakko' was recovered in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest on May 30 near the sinking site. Japanese Coast Guard ships and aircraft have been searching since May 28 for three missing crew members in the Seto Inland Sea. Japan’s Transport Safety Board is conducting an investigation on board the 'Ulsan Pioneer' which remained near the accident site.

Three people were missing after the Japanse vehicles carrier 'Byakko' capsized and sank on May 28, 2021, at 2.45 a.m. following a collision with the 'Ulsan Pioneer' on May 27 at 11.55 p.m. in the Seto Inland Sea. The incident occurred off the Ehime Prefecture, and the Imabari Coast Guard Office responded. The 'Byakko' had 12 crew members aboard. The missing were the captain Tamotsu Sato, 66, 1st engineer Yuki Ogawa, 27, and 2nd engineer Takahiro Uehata, 22, all Japanese nationalities. Five crew members were collected by a Coast Guard patrol vessel. and four by a nearby container ship. The chemical tanker had 13 crew members β€” eight from South Korea and five from Myanmar β€” and no serious injuries have been reported among them. The ship suffered significant damage to its bow but remained afloat. The 'Byakko' had left port in Kobe on May 27 at 4:30 p.m., headed to Kanda in the Fukuoka Prefecture with a cargo of vehicle parts.
