Tanker transports oil from Turkey to Israel despite Erdogan’s supposed support for Palestine

Oct 07, 2025 16:21

The 'Nissos Tinos', known for its frequent crude oil deliveries to Israel is preparing to sail from the port of Ceyhan to an “unknown destination". Researchers from the Palestinian Youth Movement and No Harbor for Genocide organizations identified that the ship had docked in Ceyhan on Oct 4, 2025, to load 33,830 tons of crude oil, and was scheduled to depart on Oct 6, at 6:38 a.m. LT. Although its final destination has not been declared, the last two voyages ended in the port of Ashkelon. The ship had sailed from Ceyhan on Sep 23 and arrived in Ashkelon on Sept 25. On Sep 10, it departed from the Russian port of Novorossiysk and returned to Israel on Sep 20. Ceyhan is the terminus of BP’s Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, transporting crude oil from Azerbaijan. From the Heydar Aliyev Terminal, the oil is loaded onto ships bound for Israel, among other destinations, accounting for nearly 30% of the country’s total crude oil imports. A recent study titled “Energy Embargo for Palestine” found that BTC oil ends up being used as fuel for Israeli fighter jets. The report argues that Turkey may be violating its international obligations to prevent genocide if the International Court of Justice in The Hague rules that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. According to the study, as in previous missions, the 'Nissos Tinos' deactivates its tracking system once it sets sail, resulting in no official record of its route. However, researchers were able to reconstruct the voyage through a combination of satellite imagery and commercial data showing the ship’s ‘sinking’ before and after loading, evidence that it unloaded its cargo in Israel. The tanker 'Kimolos' recently followed a similar route, departing from Ceyhan on Sep 27, stating its destination as Port Said (Egypt), but then appearing in Ashkelon. The Kimolos is included in the “blacklist” of 36 ships by the organization No Harbor for Genocide, which have been identified as supplying Israel with fuel and military equipment during the war in Gaza. Although Turkey imposed an embargo on trade with Israel in May 2024, data from the Stop Fuelling Genocide campaign showed that crude oil shipments between the two countries continued normally in November of that year.
