Engine failure off Serifos

On the early morning of June 28, the Port Authorities of Serifos and Milos were informed by the Joint SAR Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coastguard Headquarters that the'Nissos Rodos' had suffered a failure of the port side main engine 20 nautical miles west of Serifos, during the scheduled route from Piraeus to Heraklion. The ship sailed unassisted at a reduced speed to the port of Heraklion, where it safely disembarked 560 passengers, 164 cars and, 138 two wheelers. An inspection by officers of the Local Ship Inspection Unit (TKEP) followed, and after the presentation of a certificate of class maintenance from the monitoring classification society, the ferry was permitted to continue its voyage.

On the evening of March 12,, the Port Authorities of Piraeus, Saronic Gulf, Lavrio, Rafina, Kea and Karystos were informed by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coast Guard Headquarters, that a 61-year-old passenger of the 'Nissos Rhodos' fell over board, while the ferry was sailing in the sea area between Piraeus and Karystos. The ship was operating a route from the port of Piraeus to the ports of Chios and Mytilene at the time of the incident. Immediately, under the coordination of the EKSED. searches were launched to locate the passenger by three patrol boats of the Coast Guard and passing ships, while a Navy helicopter also took off. The searches were continued by four patrol boats, passing ships and supported by a helicopter and a plane of the Coast Guard with negative results so far.

The Port Authority of Chios was informed in the evening of March 28, 2023, about a person falling into the sea at the port, while disembarking from the 'Nissos Rhodos'. Immediately, officials went to the scene, where with the assistance of the ship's crew, the 43-year-old person was pulled ashore and then transported by ambulance to the General Hospital of Chios for medical treatment.
