The "Michele Bottiglieri" was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Oman on Dec 14, 2010, but the attackers have so far failed to gain control. Tthe ship was performing evasive manoeuvres to escape from the pirates. The Italian captain of the ship which was underway from Port Angeles to Jeddah with a cargo of grain, sent a madyday via satellite to the operation center of Italy's coastguard command. The coastguard immediately alerted naval forces operating in the area, including an Italian navy ship. Three of the crew of on the whole 23 are of Italian nationality, while the others are Filipinos.
