Container ship anchored due to engine alarm

The 'MSC Maritina V', enroute from Tauranga. has made a precautionary anchorage in Port Phillip Bay after reporting an engine alarm during the South Channel inbound transit. The ship’s master contacted Ports Victoria Vessel Traffic Services on Nov 24, 2025, at around 8 a.m, reporting their plans to anchor as a precautionary response” The vessel was able to safely anchor. The Ports Victoria VTS continued to monitor the situation and coordinated shipping movements to facilitate the vessel’s shift to anchor, Two tugs have been dispatched to assist the vessel. If necessary, they could undertake a tow of the vessel to Melbourne anchorage. It was moored in pos. S 37° 60' S 144° 50' W.

Container fell from ship

The Portuguese Maritime safety office was notified that a container fell from the deck of the 'Maersk Launceston' onto the pier causing oil spills, while conducting cargo operations at the port of Buenaventura, in the morning of Sep 15, 2021. An investigation was launched. The 'Maersk Launceston' left the port again the same day.

The Polish captain of the 'Maersk Launceston' has been released from his arrest on Oct 30. The Greek authorities were continuing the investigation into the accident off Piraeus on Oct 27 and have requested that the vessel remains in the area as long as the investigation was ongoing. The ship's manager, JT Essberger, described the release of the Polish captain as temporary. He is charged with gross negligence in the collision, in which two crew members on the minesweeper 'Kallisto' were slightly injured. JT Essberger and the captain continued to offer their cooperation with investigators. The company continued to provide legal assistance to the captain. The container ship received only very slight damage in the collision and has been confirmed seaworthy. None of the crews on the two ships were under the influence of alcohol, tests showed.

Captain has time until Nov 11 to prepare his defense

The Polish captain of the 'Maersk Launceston' has been given until November 11 to prepare his defense to a prosecutor, being accused of causing an accident through negligence and violating international regulations for safety at sea. He has been granted temporary release and also an extension to prepare his defense, granted by a court in the port city of Piraeus on Oct 28. The HS 'Kallisto' was severely damaged and became a total loss. The Piraeus Port Authority has requested that the court give it three months to conduct its investigation and compile a case file that will include reports by experts and data from the Marine Traffic global tracking system that will provide details of the two ships’ movements at the time of the incident. The 'Maersk Launceston' will be allowed to continue its voyage after it has been inspected and was deemed seaworthy. As of Oct 29, it remained docked at the Piraeus Container Terminal SA.
