Ship involved in collision with Taroko found
The "Te Hsing" that collided with a vessel and caused two deaths off outlying Penghu Island on Oct. 28, 2011, was found on Nov 4, 2011, but did not provide any clues in the search for two crewmen who went missing in the accident. The collision occurred at 3:30 a.m. that day in waters about 15 nautical miles west-northwest of Penghu. The "Te Hsing," which was shipping cargo to outlying Kinmen Island after setting off from Kaohsiung, was located near waters off Penghu's Siyu Lighthouse at around 1 p.m. The ship appeared to be intact after an initial inspection, but there was no trace of the two crewmen who have not been accounted for. Its collision with the Liberian-registered vessel "Taroko" left a Taiwanese and an Indonesian crew member dead at the scene, but the Taiwanese captain and another Indonesian crew member went missing.
SAR forces still combing the sea
A joint sea and air search and rescue operation was still under way on Oct 29, 2011, searching for the missing crew members from "Teh-hsing (εΎ·θθ)", which shuttled between Kaohsiung and the offshore Kinmen Island, transporting material for the Taiwan military. Naval vessels were combing the seas for the two missing men. The two men killed in the collision were the Taiwanese chief engineer of the "Teh-hsing" and the ship's Indonesian mechanic. The two missing men were the ship's Taiwanese captain, and an Indonesian junior engineer. The "Teh-hsing" broke into two and sank about 15 minutes after having been hit amidship on Oct 28 at 1 a.m. The "Taroko" was subsequently directed to Penghu, where Coast Patrol authorities were investigating the incident. Immediately after news of the collision reached it, the Ministry of National Defense ordered an S-70C βSeagullβ helicopter to take off from an air force base in Chiayi and fly to an area 22 nautical miles northwest of the Penghu Islands. The nine survivors, who abandoned ship shortly after the collision, were picked up from the sea by the helicopter. Meanwhile, other helicopters dispatched by the National Search and Rescue Centers flew nine sorties over the area. The Navy also ordered two vessels to head to the region.
