Ship detained due to several shortcomings
During a port state control aboard the "Nihat M" after its arrival in Brake on July 11, 2017, officials of the Water Police Brake found that no compliant procedure description was on board for the conversion of high-sulfur marine fuel to low-sulfur marine fuel as is necessary in the so-called Sulfur Emission Control Areas (SCA), such as the North Sea. Furthermore, it was found out that, during the voyage from Malaysia to Brake, sewage water had been pumped out within the German territorial waters. In co-operation with employees of the BG Transport, it was found out that the ship's own sewage treatment plant was no longer operational due to corrosion. Since a holding tank for the sewage on board was not available, these were pumped untreated into the sea. Brake police officials have initiated administrative offenses against the responsible ship officers. During the inspection they also found out that there was about 1m³ of waste disposed on board the ship. In consultation with the Port Authority in Brake, the compulsory disposal of this waste was ordered. The employees of the BG Verkehr, who had been informed after to the first findings of the WSP officials, found several further deficiencies during their on-board inspection, which led to a ban on the ship until these shortcomings had been remedied. In addition, the medical port service was informed of any deficiencies regarding the hygienic regulations on board the vessel.
