Grounding in Suez Canal
The 'MSC Istanbul' suffered an engine breakdown while transiting the Suez Canal in northern direction on March 5, 2023, at around 3 p.m. and got stuck in the Lake Timsah, Ismailiya, at canal kilometer 85, blocking the fairway for the northbound convoy. The ship was refloated again by the canal tugs 'Port Said', 'Musaed 1', 'Musaed 2' and 'Musaed 5' at around 8 p.m. and transited the canal without further problems. Also the tug 'Baraka 1' was standing by to participate as well in the refloating operations. The navigation in the Suez Canal was not affected by the accident. All the vessels coming from the North passed normally. MSC takes on charter, new 15,908-TEU MSC Istanbul from Korea's STX
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has taken in charge the third of six 15,908-TEU ships built at the STX Shipyard in Korea, the MSC Istanbul. Four will be under long-term charter from Zodiac Maritime, while the other two will be under charter from Eastern Pacific Shipping. The six sister ships were originally ordered in October 2010 by Zodiac Maritime as 13,000-TEUers. But a year later, they were upgraded as 16,000-TEU ships, the first such ships to be built by STX, reports Alphaliner. In 2013 two of the six contracts were transferred from Zodiac to Eastern Pacific within the context of a fleet split between the sons of the late Sammy Ofer. Eastern Pacific controls the latest newbuilding. The MSC Istanbul is to join the Maersk-MSC Far East-Europe AE-5/Albatros loop, offered by the 2M shipping alliance and implemented earlier this month. She follows the MSC New York delivered in October.
