Ship sank off the coast of São Nicolau.
On the afternoon of April 14, 2025, at 5.15 p.m. the 'Nhô Padre Benjamim' sank off the coast of São Nicolau. The ship reportedly encountered difficulties near Preguiça de São Nicolau, in an area known as "Praia Sgorfe." The ship was traveling between Sal and São Nicolau, transporting, among other things, gravel and trucks for construction work at the Preguiça airport. The 20 people on board, 19 crew members and one passenger, were safe. The crew was rescued by local fishermen and is being housed at the Meia Mona sports pavilion in Ribeira Brava. The shipwreck occurred upon arrival on the island of São Nicolau, off the coast of Cape Verde. The Authorities are investigating the causes of the shipwreck.
