New-Siham

The Turkish pilot fell down from the pilot ladder into the sea at Sarayburnu Pt., at the southern entrance of the Istanbul Strait, from the 'New Siham', en route from Alger to Tuapse, on Feb 4, 2024, at 03.30 a.m. The pilot boat's crew also jumped to sea in order to assist and recovered the man. Subsequently, they were transferred to the shore and a nearby hospital emergency service unit. Despite further efforts, the pilot died as a result of hypothermia. The boat crew was treated in hospital. The transit passage permission of the vessel was cancelled by the harbour master, and it moored at the Büyükdere anchorage. An investigation was launched by the local authorities in order to ascertain the cause of the incident. The vessel remained stationary in pos. 41° 09.45 N 029° 02.98' E as of Feb 5.
