It has now been clarified that the 'New Ranger' was actually boarded by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea on Dec 14 for the third time in December, as reported by Dryad Global. The security consulting company Ambrey otherwise initially dismissed the incident 160 nautical miles off the coast of Nigeria. Ambrey now admitted that an "unauthorized person" has been seen on the video surveillance from the ship. The suspects were described as "pirates". The crew sheltered themselves in the ship's citadel and nothing came of it. The same ship was also boarded off the coast of Nigeria on both Dec 5 and 6 and was also hit by pirate attacks in 2011 and 2015 off the coast of West Africa. Since the attack on the 'New Ranger', pirates have abducted 13 crew members, eight from the cargo ship 'Stevia' 29 nautical miles from the shore and subsequently, five were kidnapped from the cargo ship 'Cap Saint Georges', as it was at roughly the same distance from the coast.

The reported attack on the 'New Ranger' in the night of Dec 14 was a false alarm, the security consulting company Ambrey stated. The security company Dryad Global had reported the attack earlier. In fact the 'New Ranger' was attacked on Dec 5 and 6, when pirates boarded the ship in the Gulf of Guinea off Nigeria, but subsequently abandoned their plan. The ship was now continuing on its route from Douala to Lome, ETA Dec 16.
