Too much emissions: Zaandam cannot receive Ukrainian refugees aboard the Aurelia
The Zaanstad municipaliy is not going to receive refugees from Ukraine on the 'Aurelia' because the generators on the ship emit too much nitrogen. The 'Aurelia' could accommodate 1078 people. In May, the municipality announced that it was investigating whether it was possible to receive the ship. But on July 25, 2022, it was announced that the plan has been aborted. The ship emits more nitrogen than allowed because it is an older ship that cannot be connected to shore power. As a result, generators are needed. The municipality has examined all measures to limit the nitrogen emissions, but they did not help enough to keep them in compliance with the nitrogen regulations. The municipality will continue to look for other reception locations, possibly on other ships.
