Container ship rescued 52 migrants
On the early hours of Aug 9, 2024, the Port Authorities of Paleochora, Chora Sfakion and Agia Galini were informed by the Greek Coast Guard, that a migrant vessel with a sufficient number of people on board was in a difficult position 32.5 nautical miles south of Gavdos. The 'MSC Aube ' was diverted to assist, which located the boat and took on board the 52 migrants, and then sailed to the port of Paleochora, where the castaways were transferred to a patrol vessel and safely transported to the Tigani port of Paleochora. Afterwards, they were transferred to a temporary accommodation in Agia Chania. A preliminary investigation was carried out by the Central Port Authority of Chania.
