Container ship grounded off Mobile
Two hours after departing from the APM Terminals in Mobile on Jan 26, 2026, at 11 a.m., the 'Ruby Tower' suffered a loss of steering power at 1 p.m. and subsequently ran aground in the Mobile Bay north of Galliard Island. The Mobile Shipping Channel was closed after the incicent until the ship was removed. Two pilots were on board at the time of the grounding. Three tugs were called to refloat the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard was also on scene, and Port Authority officials were coordinating closely with responding authorities from USACE and AEMA. At approximately 4 p.m., the vessel was refloated and returned to the APM terminals on JÄan 27 at 3.30 a.m. UTC under own power with the escort of the tugs.
