Sanctioned Russian ship broke down in Kattegat
Swedish and Danish authorities have been dealing with the 'Adler' since Dec 20, 2025. The vessel, which is subject to sanctions for arms shipments, suffered an engine failure at the northern entrance to the Øresund strait. The ship was en route from the Russian port of Bronka, near St. Petersburg, where it had sailed on Dec 15, towards the North Sea with no destination given, when its engine failed. The ship eventually anchored a few miles off the Swedish coast in pos. 56° 15' N 012° 29 E off Nyhamnslage north of north Höganäs in Skåne. The Swedish Coast Guard reported that there were problems with the ship's propulsion system. The Coast Guard's emergency tug "Poseidon-KBV 001" took position near the Russian vessel. Other Coast Guard units wee on standby nearby. During the night, Swedish customs, with the support of the Coastguard, boarded and searched the ship. The inspection was continued on Dec 21. On the afternoon, the Swedish authorities left the ship, and it was allowed to leave Swedish waters on the evening. After repairs to the propulsion system have been carried out initially using onboard resources, the ship resumed its voyage on Dec 22 towards the North Sea with AIS status "for orders". The "Adler" belongs to the Moscow-based shipping company M Leasing, which is subject to EU and US sanctions. Founded in 2021, the M Leasing is suspected of transporting weapons on behalf of the Russian government. The "Adler" has recently sailed to North Africa several times and transported weapons.
