Ship's crew investigated in connection with death of a diver and cocain smuggle

May 13, 2022 11:11

The Australian police was investigating the death of a diver who was found off the coast of Newcastle on the weekend of May 8/9, 2022. During the investigation, they found 50 kilos of cocaine distributed in packages that presumably came on the 'Areti.Gr' that departed from San Lorenzo on May 8. In the morning of May 9, the police found an unconscious diver on the coast. Efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police immediately noted the unusual circumstances of the man believed to be a foreigner wearing a wetsuit with sophisticated driving gear with a high-tech respirator that doesn't emit air bubbles. In addition, next to the diver, packages were found containing a yellow substance similar to cocaine, approximately 50 kg, valued at about 14 million Dollars. The drug is believed to have come from the ship which was carrying 60,000 tons of soybean powder and had berthed at the Renova plant in TimbĂșes on May 5, and arrived in Newcastle on May 8. The crew was interviewed by the police. One of the hypotheses that was considered was that of cocaine smuggling, because, in the surveillance cameras of the port, two boats (one inflatable and one small aluminum) could be seen approaching the ship. The diver, presumably of Latin origin, has not yet been identified. The ship remained stationary at the Orica Kooragang Island (Chemical Plant) as of May 13.
