Allision in Civitavecchia

Jan 03, 2026 00:40

In the port of Civitavecchia, the 'Moby Tommy' allided with the quay on Jan 2, 2026, during docking maneuvers due to strong south-westerly winds currently affecting the Tyrrhenian coast. The impact caused some damage to the vessel's hull, but did not cause any injuries or danger to the crew or passengers, nor did it cause any environmental problems. The situation was promptly managed by the Civitavecchia Port Authority, which responded to the scene with its own technical personnel. The operations were conducted safely, and the incident was under control from the early stages. Technical assessments were cuarried out underway by inspectors specialised in navigation safety from the Civitavecchia Coast Guard, in collaboration with inspectors from the classification society Rina Service, to assess the extent of the damage sustained by the ship and ensure the damaged vessel's safe resumption of service.Regarding passenger services, the shipping company has immediately activated assistance procedures. Passengers unable to depart this evening on the ship involved in the allision have been rerouted to another ship departing from the port of Livorno, thus ensuring the continuation of their journey, albeit with a change in port of call. A technical-administrative investigation into the causes of the accident has been launched by the Civitavecchia Coast Guard to accurately reconstruct the accident's dynamics, including in light of the adverse weather and sea conditions that made docking maneuvers more complex.
