Ferry service interrupted after vehicles crash
Red Funnel had to suspended the service of the 'Red Eagle' in East Cowes on the morning of Sep 25, 2025), after the crash of a lorry with another vehicle, due to which the ferry was unable to sail until specialist expertise arrived. The 'Red Eagle' had to remain alongside, and the operator had to initiate a full suspension of the vehicle ferry service.The 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. sailings from Southampton and the 9.30 a.m, 10.30 a.m. and the 11.30 a.m. crossing from East Cowes had to be cancelled. At 10.40 a.m. the vehicles have been safely removed from the ferry, and the service has since resumed in full.
Ferry broke down and was towed to port
The 'red Eagle' broke down mid-crossing on the scheduled sailing between between East Cowes and Southampton on Southampton Water and had to be towed by a tug into port in Southampton on the afternoon of July 23, 2025. The 7:30 p.m. BST crossing from East Cowes has been cancelled, as well as the 's 05:00 a.m. sailing from Southampton on July 24 due to essential repairs on the aft engine. As of July 24, the ferry remained stationary in Southanpton.
Solent crossings cancelled due to pump issue
The 'Red Eagle' has been pulled from service once again, with a number of cancellations on the night of April 22. An issue with the cooling pump has led to the cancellation of at least four sailings on the East Cowes-Southampton vehicle ferry service. Affected were the 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. sailings from Southampton and the scheduled departures at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. from East Cowes. It was unclear if there would be subsequent cancellations on April 23.
Sailings disrupted due to engine issues
The 'Red Eagle' suffered engine issues short time after it had returned to service after an extended period in dry dock at Falmouth on the morning of April 5, 2025. The issueled to the cancellation of at least two sailings, with the potential for disruption to services all day. The 'Red Eagle' had departed East Cowes at 06:30 a.m., but as the ferry headed to Southampton, an engine issue developed. The vessel came to a complete halt near Netley at 07:10 a.m. The ferry was then slowly making progress up Southampton Water. Red Funnel has cancelled the departures from Southampton until 9.15 p.m. and thesailings from East Cowes until 9.45 p.m. as a result. Foot passengers were being advised to travel on the Southampton-West Cowes high-speed service which was unaffected. Due to a failure of the aft engine high-temperature cooling pump, the vessel remained removed from service the whole weekend while technical teams were trying make the necessary repairs. In the meantime, the 'Red Falcon' and 'Red Osprey' were continuing to sail, offering most passengers previously booked on the 'Red Eagle' the ability to sail either 60 minutes sooner or later than planned.
