Rudder damage in ice

Mar 24, 2019 13:32

On March 24, 2019, at 1.50 p.m. the Canadian tug "Lois M" (IMO: 9017616) arrived at the disabled "Jana Desgagnes" off Cape Ray. The tanker with a crew of 17 on board had got stuck in heavy ice in the Cabot Strait, 16 miles SW of Port aux Basques, on March 21, having sailed from Come By Chance the prevous day. The rudder was damaged by ice, and the ship asked for assistance. The Canadian Coast Guard sent the icebreaker "Captain Molly Kool" (IMO: 9199646) to assist and prevent the tanker's drift towards the shore. The ship was carrying a cargo of petroleum and fuel. As the lead response agency, the Canadian Coastguard activated the Incident Command Post at the Environmental Response center in St. John's. Its crews were working with the captain and owner to mitigate any potential pollution. The icebreakers "Captain Molly Kool" and "Louis S. St-Laurent" started assisting the "Jana Desgagnes" in difficult ice conditions and were working to get the ship clear from the coast. The "Captain Molly Kool" used its unique towing notch configuration to keep the "Jana Desgagnes" safe while awaiting commercial tug assistance. On March 23, its position was off Cape Anguille. It was to be towed to Sydney in Nova Scotia for repairs by the "Lois M". Report with photo and video: https://vocm.com/news/canadian-coast-guard-to-resume-towing-of-tanker-stuck-off-coast-of-nl/

Tanker had near miss on St. Claire River

May 23, 2018 11:25

The "Jana Desgagnes" veeres off course on the St. Clair River late on May 21, 2018, coming extremely close to the seawall along the Thomas Edison Parkway under the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron around 10:30 p.m. First the ship went sideways in the middle of the river and then came straight toward the wall. An incorrect command was given to go to port when it should have been starboard. The captain of the tanker was on the bridge and quickly corrected the error. The pilot who made the error had been on the vessel before. The shhip was carrying clean refined oil and heading to Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, Ontario. At least one fisherman lost his pole after his line got tangled up near where the tanker approached. That section of shipping channel where Lake Huron flows into the St. Clair River is considered one of the more challenging areas to navigate because of the strong current funneling from the lake combined with the bend in the river.
