Barge lightered, vessels moved away

Nov 26, 2025 10:42

On Nov 19, the 'Bering Trader', loaded with 200 stacked containers, was moved to Port John harbour, to keep it safe from predicted wind. A marine response contractor arrived on site on Nov 20 and began operations to transfer containers to a receiving barge, while the 'Bering Trader' was being monitored. On Nov 20, a coordination call was held with the Coast Guard, Heiltsuk Nation, EEB, a marine response contractor, and the Dunlap Towing. On Nov 21, a coordination call was held with CCG, Heiltsuk Nation, EEB, a marine response contractor, and the responsible person. Operations to transfer containers from the 'Bering Trader' to a receiving barge continued through the day. No pollution or loss of cargo was reported. Transport Canada was on site, while the EEB continued to monitor the situation. The Environmental Emergency Branch (EEB) was aware of the situation. On the afternoon of Nov 23, the tug and barge were given clearance from Transport Canada and the US Coast Guard to continue on to Seattle and left the area. BC Coast Pilots boarded the 'Malolo' to guide it south. It was escorted by the tug 'Daniel Foss' and the Canadian Coast Guard emergency towing vessel 'Atlantic Eagle'. Involved in the response were the Dunlap Towing, Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV), Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Transport Canada (TC), and Heiltsuk Nation Marine Emergency Response Team. Towed barge damaged and taking on water near Bella Bella

Nov 19, 2025 12:42

A barge of the Alaska Marine Line, which was being towed by the 'Malolo' was damaged and started taking on water through a hole in the bottom near Bella Bella, around 480 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, on British Columbias Central Coast on Nov 18, 2025, at around 10:15 a.m. PT, en route from Alaska to Seattle, Washintgon. The incident occurred in the Fisher Channel, around 15 kilometres east of Bella Bella. Dive surveys showed that the hull on one part of the barge was compromised, so it must have hit the ground at some point. At around 4 p.m. the barge was in a "pretty exposed, vulnerable area, and the Central Coast was expecting rain and wind in the next 24 hours. A team of the Heiltsuk First Nation's integrated resource management department was working together with the captain and the Canadian Coast Guard to have the tug and barge moved to a nearby anchorage to have it in safe waters and put some precautionary oil boom around the vessel. The barge remained stable and was not actively continuing to sink. The Alaska Marine Lines sent another barge to transfer some cargo to lighten the load, so both barges can resume their journeys. The barge did not carry any groceries or supplies for Southeast Alaska, and thus the incident would not cause any supply chain disruptions for Southeast Alaska communities. Four vessels, among them the tug 'Daniel Foss' (IMO: 7638454) were responding to the barge on Nov 18, and a rotating crew stayed in the area over the course of the night.
