Lofoten

The 'Lofoten' will be converted into a training ship for aspiring Norwegian seafarers. The ship has been operated by Hurtigruten for almost six decades. The shipping company has signed a letter of intent with the Norwegian-based educational foundation Sørlandet Maritime High School. The 151-bed ship will receive its first students in August 2021. The school has trained young sailors since 1927, and the 'Lofoten' will be its fifth training ship, where students live, work and practice their skills on board to meet the growing demand for qualified seafarers, especially those with experience in training vessels. As part of the sale agreement, Hurtigruten and the school agreed to arrange for cadets to be educated and trained through apprenticeship programs also on other Hurtigruten-operating ships. Hurtigruten is considering launching one or more farewell trips off the Norwegian coast in the spring of 2021, if the Covid-19 situation allows.

On May 1, 2015, an employee of the tourist company Imagine Nordkyn AS fell into in the sea in the Kjøllefjord when he moving his speed boat away from the "Lofoten". The ship turned around and plucked the man in the 40ies from the water with an MOB boat and taken aboard within a few minutes. He was stuffed with warm clothes and was taken care of. The Østfinnmark police district investigated the case .
