Humber-Sprinter

On May 1, 2026, at around 5:40 p.m., the crew of the 'Humber Sprinter', enroute from Riga to Immingham, reported a fire in the engine room, while the ship was berthed in the locks of the Kiel Canal in KielHoltenau. However, no flames or smoke were visible from the outside. The crew of the freighter initially tackled the fire themselves, which was located in a generator in the engine room, using fire extinguishers. The initial attack was successful and extinguished the flames. Because the extent of the fire was initially unclear, the fire department dispatched its new fireboat 'Füerschip' to the lock, in addition to crews from the North and Main stations. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus then entered and inspected the engine room. At around 6:40 p.m., the fire was declared extinguished, and the fire fighters left the scene. One lock chamber had to be closed during the operation. The freighter was moved to the North Harbour after the end of investigatios by the police. It berthed at the Voith Quay. The German Maritime Professional Association imposed a ban on further sailing until the classification has been confirmed.
