Container ships in collision off Chattogram
On May 1, 2026, at 9.30 a.m., the container ship 'Maersk Chattogram' (IMO: 9761023) and the 'HR Turag', enroute from Singapore, were in allision on the outer anchorage of the port of Chattogram. The accident occurred before the piloting process began. The 'Maersk Chattogram' tried to pass the anchored 'HR Turag' at its port side and hit it with its starboard side stern stern. On the morning of May 3, the Maersk vessel was taken to the JCB jetty in the outer port, while the 'HR Turag' remained moored in pos. 22° 10' N 091° 47' E. To bring the ' Maersk Chattogram' to port, the port authorities established a controlled navigation corridor from the estuary to the New Mooring Container Terminal, temporarily suspending general vessel movement. Each vessel was escorted by three tugs, with additional support on standby, while operations were monitored through the Vessel Traffic Management System. The decision was taken to prevent prolonged delays in cargo handling. A large number of import containers had remained stuck since May 1. Considering the economic impact, the vessels were brought in in under strict safety arrangements. They were carrying nearly 2,900 import containers in total. The 'Maersk Chattogram' was carrying 1,878 containers, and the 'HR Turag' was carrying approximately 1,000 containers. Both ships were to be unloaded, but would not take export shipments, as they were currently unfit to sail and have to be sent to dockyards for repairs after damage assessments and seaworthiness clearance. The impact damaged the aft section of the 'Maersk Chattogram', which was breached at starboard side on a length of several metres above the waterline. The damage was, however, limited to the external hull. The engine and steering gear remained in good condition. Maersk Bangladesh would take a decision on the vessels' next steps will be taken after unloading. The safety measures have been strengthened following the incident, including keeping additional tugs on standby. The Mercantile Marine Department has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident and submit a report within seven working days. At the same time, a joint investigation committee was established between the Department of Shipping and the Ministry of Shipping.
