It has taken less than a year for all Hanjin Shipping’s boxships to be renamed. Two weeks today will mark the first anniversary since Hanjin Shipping sought court protection becoming one of the most famous shipping bankruptcies in history. “The recent renaming of the 5,067 teu Hanjin Scarlet, the last vessel to bear the Korean carrier’s colours, to Maersk Iyo, has consigned the once mighty Hanjin name to maritime history,” Alphaliner noted in its most recent weekly report. The crew of the "Hanjin Scarllet" which was being stranded in the Gulf Islands for months was preparing to go home this week. The ship and its 16-member crew have been stuck off the B.C. coast since early September 2016 when Hanjin Shipping went bankrupt and operations around the world were left in limbo with unpaid bills. The captain of the "Hanjin Scarlet" that the ship had been sold and the crew would be sent home. Six were from Korea and the rest are Filipino. The crew being paid and provided for, including Internet access to speak to their families. Local mariners and Filipino community leaders in Victoria, B.C. have been working to make Christmas a bit merrier for the stranded crew of the Hanjin Scarlet, which is at anchor and awaiting orders in the Southern Gulf Islands. The vessel has been idle since Hanjin Shipping collapsed at the end of August, and the crewmembers still do not know when they will be able to return home. Crewmember Chef Carlo told ABS CBN that the conditions on board are good: their salaries are being paid, and they have food, water, internet access and movies. But uncertainty remains as to the Scarlet's future.
