On Nov 14, 2022, at 11.32 a.m. UTC, while the French skipper Fabrice Amedeo was en route to Cascais in Portugal after suffering damage during the Route du Rhum-Destination Gudeloupe solo Transatlantic race, there was an explosion aboard his Imoca 'Nexans - Art & Fenêtres'. This led to a fire on board which spread, requiring Amedeo to abandon his boat which sank soon after. A rescue operation was immediately set up. After being informed by Race Direction, the Portuguese maritime rescue centre contacted ships in the area of the accident. The 'Maersk Brani', en route from Hamburg to Cartagena, was close by and diverted immediately, as well as the 'Volans Leader' and a fixed-wing aircraft of the RCC Lajes. The rescue operation went well and at 2.21 p.m. UTC, Amedeo, 44, was taken safely on board the container ship. He has not suffered any injuries. He will be taken ashore in Ponta Delgada, on the southern side of the island of São Miguel in the Azores. Work on the Maersk Brani container ship in Sydney has been disrupted by a protest in support of 300 workers sacked at Ports of Auckland. Several thousand people marched in Auckland on Saturday in support of the workers. "My understanding is a shift was working the ship in Sydney. That shift came out the gate and the new shift was picketed from going in the gate," Maritime Union of New Zealand national president Garry Parsloe told NZ Newswire. "I've been told it's the public of Sydney who've done it. They're a bit upset at the way the Ports of Auckland is attacking its workers. "It's people sick of big business and people like that smashing people's lives," Mr Parsloe said.
