On March 13, 2026, the ' Jupiter', enroute from the Russian port of Vysotsk, was drifting east of Lampedusa in pos. 35° 34' N 013° 4 E. The speed has dropped to 1.5 knots, indicating a loss of propulsion or "Not Under Command" status. The AIS data were showing erratic movements (zigzagging), consistent with a vessel adrift or struggling with mechanical failure. The Russian tanker was under EU, UK (OFSI), and US (OFAC) sanctions. The vessel completed a wide loop and was headingsouth at 2.6 knots, which was regarded as a tactical maneuvering, not a commercial transit. Contrary to disinformation, the ship was under command with engines running and remained strategically positioned between Malta and the drifting wreck of the 'Arctic Metagaz'. It is part of the "Shadow Fleet" used to transport oil products outside Western price caps. The proximity to the Pelagie Islands' protected waters while "under way" at minimal speed posed a high risk of grounding or collision. All vessels in the area are advised to maintain a wide berth. The situation remained fluid with no official Italian government statement released yet.
