Sea Shepherd founder arrested in Nuuk

Jul 23, 2024 10:32

Paul Watson, founder of the NGO Sea Shepherd, was arrested in Nuuk, Greenland, on the morning of July 21, 2024. Japan, which is regularly targeted by the NGO due to its controversial whaling activities, had issued a request for the activist's arrest and extradition. Watson, who is also co-founder of the NGO Greenpeace, was arrested when he arrived in Nuuk aboard the 'John Paul DeJoria', which berthed in the port with 25 volunteers on board to resupply. The ship was bound for the Northwest Passage in the frame of the Operation Kangei Maru, to intercept Japan's new whaler 'Kangei Maru' in the North Pacific. Watson will be brought to court, where police will ask for his detention. Then it will be decided whether or not he will be extradited to Japan. The NGO asked the Danish government to release Captain Watson.
